How to enter a meter replacement

When a meter is replaced with a new one, enter the replacement, so that the new meter's readings start again from 0 and each month's usage stays right.

Meters get replaced: a water meter breaks, or its calibration runs out. The new meter starts counting again, usually from 0, so its first reading is much lower than the old meter's last one. Enter the replacement, and ky24 adds up what both meters counted that month: the usage stays right on the readings page, on the home page and in exports.

What you need

Two numbers, from the replacement report or from the meters themselves:

ValueExample
The old meter's last reading, when it was taken out1,234.567 m³
The new meter's first reading, when it was put in0 m³

There's no date or month to choose: the replacement is entered as of now, and ky24 works out which reading is the new meter's first (see Which reading is the new meter's first).

Enter a replacement

  1. Open the readings page and pick the building.
  2. In the apartment's row, or the building's for its own meters, click the history button before the meter's fields.
  3. Under the history, click Replace meter.
  4. Fill in the old meter's last reading and the new meter's first, and click Save.

From then on, enter readings as the new meter shows them. In the month the new meter's readings start, under the meter's fields it says New meter from 0, and its history shows the replacement between the old meter's last reading and the new meter's first.

Which reading is the new meter's first

ky24 looks at the readings entered so far, and the form says what it found before you save:

  • This month's reading isn't entered yet: it will be the new meter's first.
  • This month's reading is entered already: it was taken from the old meter, so the new meter's first reading is next month's. Until then, the replacement shows at the top of the meter's history.
  • A reading is lower than the one before it, and so are the ones after it: that's the new meter's, entered before the replacement. E.g. a resident entered the new meter's 3.2, which the history showed in red, and the replacement is entered afterwards: it goes in that month.

"This month" is the month whose readings are entered now: with a reading period that ends in the next month, e.g. from the 25th to the 5th, it's still last month until the 5th.

If ky24 picks the wrong month, e.g. because a reading was taken before the replacement but entered after it, delete the replacement, fix the reading, and enter the replacement again.

How usage is counted

In the month of the replacement, the usage is what the old meter counted after the month before's reading, and what the new one counted that month:

(old meter's last reading − the month before's reading) + (the month's reading − new meter's first reading)

For example, September's reading is 1,230 m³, the old meter showed 1,234.567 m³ when it was taken out, and the new one started from 0 and showed 3.2 m³ at the end of October. October's usage is 4.567 + 3.2 = 7.767 m³.

A meter can be replaced again in the same month, e.g. when the new one turns out to be broken: then every meter's part is added up. The other months are counted as always: each reading minus the one before.

Checks

A meter doesn't count backwards, so the form checks the values against the readings and replacements around the replacement:

  • The old meter's last reading can't be lower than its reading before, e.g. September's.
  • The new meter's first reading can't be higher than its reading after, e.g. October's, if that's entered already.

The hints under the fields show these values. If one of them is wrong, fix it on the readings page first. The same replacement can't be entered twice in a row, e.g. by saving the form again.

Who can enter replacements

Replacements are part of the meter's readings: everyone who sees the readings sees them, and they take the same permissions, in your role in the apartment or the building:

  • Enter readings, to enter a replacement.
  • Edit readings, to change its values with the pencil button in the meter's history.
  • Delete readings, to delete one with the trash button in the meter's history.

Like readings, they're entered and changed in the reading period of the month they go in, unless your role lets you edit the building (see How to create meters).

When readings drop without a replacement

If a reading is lower than the one before it, the meter's history shows that month's usage in red: it's a typo, or the meter was replaced and the replacement wasn't entered. Such a month has no usage on the home page and in exports until it's fixed: correct the reading, or enter the replacement, which goes in that month.

In exports

In an export format, {{ cw.used }} is the month's usage with every meter counted. In the month of a replacement, {{ cw.removed }} is the old meter's last reading and {{ cw.installed }} the new meter's first: the first old meter's and the last new meter's, if it was replaced more than once. In the other months, they're written as nothing.
